What a beautiful day for our first official training day this year,The sun was shining and the warm weather had finally melted away all the ice from the Canal and we were able to get out in the canoe.
We started a 2 hour training session at the Basingstoke canal centre Mytchett, heading towards farnborough. With bums on seats and oars in the water we were off. We passed Potters, The Swan, Ash Vale, travelled along the Aqueduct crossing the black water valley A331. Through into Ash stopping only to take a couple of photos and then we came to Ash Lock. We disembarked and went to have a look. Stuart showed me the mechanics of how a lock functions, as this was our first training session we decided it was best to start heading back, instead of venturing on. On our way back we saw a lot of water fowl, sea birds and even got a glimpse of a kingfisher. With the sun behind us the reflections were stunning so I took a few snaps. We arrived back at the Canal centre, after canoeing 7.4 miles in 2 hours which wasn't bad going. It was rather busy on and along the canal lots of other kayaks and canoes, fisherman, dog walkers and hikers. We met a lot of pleasant people, asking us about our challenge, which was lovely to see how interested they all were.
